When we took on the communication project with the Brazilian women's 7s rugby team, our main goal was to boost how well everyone communicated, both during the heat of the game and in everyday situations. It was about getting everyone—from the players to the coaches—on the same page. Here’s how we tackled it:
1. Diagnosis: First up, we needed to really dig into what was going wrong. We watched games, hung out at practices, and had honest chats with the team and staff. It was all about spotting where messages were getting lost in translation or just not getting through at all.
2. Hypotheses: With all this fresh info, we started guessing what might be behind these communication snags. Maybe it was the way messages were being delivered, maybe some were shy about speaking up, or perhaps the noise of the game day was drowning out crucial calls.
3. Stimulus Designs: Armed with our theories, we got creative with some solutions. We whipped up new, easy-to-grasp strategies like clearer hand signals and codewords for the field, and off the field, we rolled out workshops to boost everyone’s chat skills.
4. Interventions On and Off the Field: We put our new tools and tactics to the test, both at games and during team activities. On-field, it was all about making those quick calls clearer. Off the field, we focused on building a stronger, more open team vibe with lots of team-building and regular heart-to-hearts.
5. Results: After putting all these changes into play for a while, the difference was night and day. The team started working together like a well-oiled machine during games, and everyone seemed to feel more at ease talking and sharing ideas, no matter the setting. We saw real improvements in how the team performed and how everyone felt being part of the group.
This whole experience taught us a lot about how small changes in how we talk can make a huge difference in performance. It was awesome to see everyone really come together and step up their game, both on and off the field.
